Canaan Launches A16 Series Bitcoin Miner With 12.8 J/TH Efficiency, Matching Bitmain’s S21 Line

Canaan Inc. (NASDAQ: CAN) has unveiled its latest generation of bitcoin mining machines, the Avalon A16 series, featuring a power efficiency of 12.8 J/TH.

The A16 mining rigs—on par with Bitmain’s flagship Antminer S21 models—were announced Tuesday at the Blockchain Life 2025 summit in Dubai. Canaan said that the A16XP, the first model in the new lineup, delivers 300 TH/s of hashrate in an air-cooled configuration.

The company said shipments will originate from its manufacturing bases in North America, East Asia, and Southeast Asia, with pre-orders now open.

The launch represents Canaan’s latest performance upgrade since the Avalon A15 series, which was introduced last year. As previously reported, the company secured a 50,000-unit order for the A15 Pro model earlier this month—one of its largest known commercial contracts to date.

By reaching parity with Bitmain’s 13 J/TH efficiency for the hydro-cooling S21XPs, the air-cooling A16 series places Canaan back in direct competition with the sector’s leading manufacturers. The company said the new lineup reinforces its vertically integrated model, spanning ASIC design, hardware sales, self-mining, and bitcoin treasury management.

Canaan’s latest push follows its expansion into gas-to-compute pilot projects in Canada and efforts to localize production in the U.S., signaling its broader strategy to strengthen global supply chains and service reach amid rising risks of global trade tariffs.
